Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does T mean in HFBR-1414TZ?

T identifies the threaded ST port option, which supports panel mounting. Broadcom specifies the relevant mechanical drawing and a maximum 2.8 mm wall thickness with the HFBR-4411Z hardware arrangement. Confirm the actual panel, fasteners, PCB footprint and rear clearance; ST optical mating alone does not establish mechanical interchangeability.

2. Can HFBR-1414TZ be driven directly from a logic output?

The part contains an LED emitter and requires a suitable current-limited driver. The series datasheet includes driver examples, but output-port capability, LED forward voltage, temperature and waveform shape all affect the current. Do not assume a logic pin can source the chosen current merely because the surrounding link circuitry uses a familiar supply voltage.

3. Does using 62.5/125 µm fiber guarantee the catalog link distance?

No. At 60 mA over the stated temperature range, the specified 62.5/125 µm launch row gives more power than the specified 50/125 µm row, but the complete link still depends on receiver sensitivity, cable attenuation, numerical aperture, connectors, splices, aging and reserve. Check receiver overload as well as sensitivity for short links.

4. Can HFBR-1414PTZ replace HFBR-1414TZ without a circuit review?

AT45DB041D-SU: Use Renesas' Official D-to-E Map to Plan Your DataFlash Migration Before the Next Reorder

Category: Manufacturer Insights

By Alice Chen

AT45DB041D-SU is a legacy 4-Mbit DataFlash device in an eight-lead wide-body SOIC. Renesas hosts an official D-to-E conversion notice that gives buyers a documented migration route, including changes to the device ID and ordering options. Use that route to organize an engineering review before the next reorder. A matching capacity and an eight-pin package do not settle the page configuration, firmware or assembly requirements.

Key Takeaways

  • The unsuffixed AT45DB041D-SU order entry uses the wide-body 8S2 SOIC, a 2.7–3.6 V supply range and a 66 MHz maximum SCK for applicable commands.
  • Its 2,048 pages can use 264-byte standard pages or 256-byte binary pages; the D device's binary-page conversion is one-time programmable.
  • Official notice PDF007 maps AT45DB041D-SU to AT45DB041E-SHN-B or AT45DB041E-SHN-T, with a wide-body legacy-design footnote.
  • The notice dated August 21, 2013 gives January 31, 2014 last-time-buy and July 31, 2014 last-ship dates for D devices. Those are historical milestones, not future ordering deadlines.

Use the Official Conversion Map, Not a Similar Product Name

The Renesas-hosted PDF007 notice was issued by Adesto for the industrial AT45DB041D family. This explains why an existing BOM, old device marking and current support portal may carry different company names. Preserve the approved component's historical identity and use the present document host to follow the migration evidence.

*Figure 1. DataFlash migration requires separate page-mode, ID-response and package checks. Both D page modes use 2,048 pages; binary conversion on the D device is one-time programmable. The historical PDF007 wide-body map is a review route, not unconditional substitution approval.*

Not automatically. The P version adds an improved-protection circuit with a parallel Zener diode. Broadcom lists different reverse-input-voltage and diode-capacitance behavior for P parts. Evaluate the driver, reverse transients and switching behavior along with the port and mechanical fit before approving that change.

5. What information makes an HFBR-1414TZ RFQ actionable?

Provide the full transmitter code, receiver code, fiber type and NA, installed length and connectors, signaling format/rate, LED drive, temperature range, mounting details, quantity and need-by date. State whether the inquiry is an exact spare or permits an engineering-reviewed alternative. Specify required source records and inspection scope separately; a family datasheet does not establish the condition or availability of a particular lot.

The notice describes the E family as pin-to-pin and functionally backward compatible, subject to its listed exceptions and enhancements. That is valuable manufacturer guidance, but it is not a sign-off for every board and firmware image. A buyer can use the mapping to request the right candidate; engineering still needs to approve the implementation.

How Do You Preserve AT45DB041D-SU Page Addressing During Migration?

Start by reading the existing unit's page configuration and reviewing the driver, rather than assuming the software uses ordinary linear SPI NOR addressing. The historical Atmel D datasheet defines different address-bit layouts for 264-byte and 256-byte pages. Both use 2,048 pages, but the byte offset consumes nine bits in standard mode and eight in binary mode.

The useful diagnostic is a page-boundary test. Write distinct patterns near the end of one page and the beginning of the next, then read them using the application's normal path. Include any file-system metadata or log-record routine that stores payload and auxiliary bytes differently. A test confined to page zero may miss an address-packing error, a boundary risk also examined in our 24LC16BT-E/OT addressing and block wrap-around review.

Status-register bit 0 identifies the D device's page mode: 0 means 264 bytes; 1 means 256 bytes. Its binary conversion uses a one-time programmable configuration and requires power cycling. Do not run a page-conversion command as a harmless probe on production inventory. Confirm the required configuration first and validate the E device's own command sequence before making any change.

illustration

For the unsuffixed SU device, the old ordering table specifies 2.7–3.6 V and up to 66 MHz for applicable commands. The separate -2.5 version has a 50 MHz ceiling, while the low-frequency 03h continuous-read command is limited to 33 MHz in the D datasheet. A single “66 MHz flash” description therefore omits details that affect actual firmware timing.

What Are the Alternatives to AT45DB041D-SU?

AT45DB041E-SHN-T is the direct migration candidate listed for the wide-body tape-and-reel route; the -B code is the corresponding bulk option. AT45DB041E-SSHN-T is a narrow-body comparison for a board redesign, not the same land pattern as the D-SU wide-body part.

Source: PDF007 and Renesas' current AT45DB041E information. The exact AT45DB041E-SHN-T page is Active and identifies the tape-and-reel SOIC-W part; the actual offer and order conditions still need confirmation.

Renesas' current AT45DB041E product page supports further evaluation of the E family. It does not make old D stock newly manufactured, and a historical replacement table does not reserve inventory. For an urgent legacy build, compare the cost and schedule of qualifying E parts with the evidence needed to accept a remaining D lot.

Give Firmware and Production a Shared Release Checklist

An effective migration review has three small deliverables. Engineering owns an approved pinout and timing comparison. Firmware owns ID recognition, page-boundary read/write, protection settings, power-up delay and recovery behavior. Production owns the accepted package, carrier, lead finish and programming procedure.

Use a complete write, power-cycle and read-back sequence, not only a successful JEDEC-ID read. Include the application's busy polling and power-interruption handling. Where sector protection or permanent lockdown is used, verify those operations on controlled evaluation devices before releasing production settings. That protects the migration's actual data function, rather than proving only that an SPI peripheral responds.

The commercial decision can then be explicit: continue sourcing the approved D-SU for a bounded legacy requirement, or purchase an engineering-approved E code for future builds. Keeping those as separate order lines prevents an unapproved substitution from becoming hidden inside a procurement “equivalent” field.

Request an AT45DB041D-SU quote from YG GROUP with AT45DB041D-SU or the approved E code, page configuration, board supply, SPI command/clock requirements, package and carrier, quantity and need-by date. For legacy material, also state the documentation, lot-condition and inspection requirements to be discussed. This gives the quotation a defined engineering target without assuming interchangeability or current stock.
